ABOUT MANUSCRIPT :The Greek physician Dioscorides compiled his De Materia Medica in the first century AD, listing and describing around 700 plants and over 1,000 drugs, discussing their medicinal effects. This treatise, written in Greek, had a profound influence on the history of medicine and served as the foundation for subsequent treatises on materia medica for centuries. The original work consisted of five books, with two additional books on poisonous plants and animals later added and falsely attributed to Dioscorides. Several Arabic versions of the treatise were made, and many preserved manuscripts are richly illustrated with paintings of plants and other medical substances. Occasionally, especially in 13th-century Baghdad, manuscripts included paintings of physicians preparing the medicines.De Materia Medica was translated into Arabic under the title Kitab al-Hasha’ish (كتاب الحشائش) by Iṣṭifan ibn Bāsīl (إصطفن إبن بسيل) during the reign of Caliph al-Mutawakkil (847-861) and was revised by Hunaibn Ishaq.Contents: Dioscorides' book is divided into five treatises and two appendixes on animal poisons which are considered to be part of the book and constitute the sixth and seventh treatise.Below are given the topics of these treatises:It is a 5th volume encyclopedia about herbal medicine and related medicinal substances (a pharmacopeia), that was widely read for more than 2000 years
