ABOUT MANUSCRIPT : | Mīzānal-Ṭibb (The Measure of Medicine) is a renowned medical treatise authored by Muhammad Akbar Arzani (d. 1772). In the introduction, Arzani explains that his aim in writing this work was to support impoverished students who wished to study medicine, akin to those with more resources. The clarity and concise yet comprehensive nature of Arzani's text contributed to its status as a foundational work for novice medical students from the 18th century onward. The text is organized into three sections: the first addresses the four qualities (heat, cold, moisture, and dryness); the second covers simple and compound drugs and foods; and the third focuses on diseases and their treatments. The bulk of the book is devoted to the third section, which is further divided into chapters dealing with the treatment of diseases affecting specific organs, as well as sections on ailments unique to women and men, fevers, and swellings. The volume concludes with shorter treatises by other authors on topis such as pulse and urine. Muhammad Akbar Arzani was a prominent Mughal physician renowned throughout Iran and South Asia. His significance is well-documented in contemporary accounts of South Asian scholarship and history. While there is debate over whether Arzani was born in Persia or India, he is widely recognized as the first Mughal physician to systematically translate Arabic medical works into Persian. His texts were highly influential and widely used as instructional material for medical students in both India and Persia. Additionally, Arzani was a Sufi and a member of the Qadiriyya order. |
