ABOUT MANUSCRIPT : | Tazkira al-Kahhalin is a comprehensive work divided into three Maqalat (treatises), each addressing different aspects of ophthalmology. 1. First Maqalah: This section comprises 21 Babs (chapters) focused on the anatomy and physiology of the eye. It provides foundational knowledge essential for understanding eye diseases and their treatments. 2. Second Maqalah: Consisting of 78 Babs, this section deals with externally visible eye diseases. It covers symptoms and treatments in detail, addressing a wide range of conditions observable through external examination. 3. Third Maqalah: This part includes 27 Babs and discusses hidden eye diseases, dietetics, and general medical practices from an ophthalmic perspective. It explores conditions affecting the visual mechanism, such as diseases of the crystalline fluid, vitreous humor, optic nerve, as well as night blindness, day blindness, and abnormalities of the extraocular muscles. This section provides insights into symptoms, treatments, and gene ral management from an ophthalmological viewpoint. The author, 'Alī Ibn 'Isā Al-Kaḥḥāl, also notes that he incorporated numerous additions based on personal observations from his clinical practice, expanding on the works of Galen and Hunayn. For centuries, this work was considered essential for students of ophthalmic medicine, even in Europe. At the end of the book, Ibn 'Isā lists 143 simple medications in alphabetical order, detailing their effects on the eye, and provides 80 additional compounded prescriptions. The text includes thorough descriptions of 130 eye diseases, including their signs, symptoms, and phases, along with medical and possibly surgical management. Due to its extensive detail and historical significance, Tazkira al-Kahhalin is regarded as a seminal text in Arabian ophthalmology |
